We are currently hiring a Packaging Engineer in Breinigsville, PA
The Packaging Engineer identifies, evaluates, develops, designs, and implements cost savings projects, new product development, sustainability projects, and operating efficiency projects to achieve increased productivity, enhanced manufacturing flexibility and capacity, improved product quality, safer operations, and ensures environmental compliance.


What You'll Brew:
* Drive packaging material cost savings projects across the Boston Beer manufacturing network including internal breweries and co-man sites.
* Working cross functionally with Procurement, Breweries, Supply Chain, Brand Development, Commercialization, New Product Development, Quality, and others to evaluate packaging materials and structures for feasibility and operational impact (changeovers, OEE, complexity) to the breweries and then lead the execution of those projects to meet company wide and brewery specific objectives and timelines.
* Drive packaging material sustainability
* Collaborate on trial qualification reporting and communications sent amongst the breweries.
* Identifying, developing, and commercializing new packaging materials, technologies, and suppliers that bring competitive, consumer, and especially cost advantage to Boston Beer.
* Supporting the Supply Chain manufacturing network and production breweries with subject matter expertise on packaging materials

Cost Saving:
* Aid in identification and implementation of Gross Margin cost saving improvement opportunities related to packaging materials and packaging operations.
* Understand the performance versus cost implications of packaging materials and identify alternatives.
* Support Procurement and Supply Chain packaging initiatives for supply continuity and risk management by providing input to RFP process and new vendor qualification. Lead/support the qualification of new vendors and supply locations.

Sustainability:
* Analyze and report packaging material sustainability metrics
* Support packaging sustainability improvements

New Packaging Development:
* Lead the trialing of new packaging materials at Boston Beer breweries and 3rd party manufacturers
* Review and approve artwork for packaging materials
* Manage weights and dimensions information for various pack formats

Operational Support:
* Support continuous improvement efforts related to packaging material delivery and performance
* Support identification and resolution of packaging material complaints and issues as required
* Support vendor audit and qualification process for packaging material vendors, sites, and lines

General and Administrative:
* Create and maintain packaging material specifications and other required documentation for all assigned projects
* Coordinate package material testing as required at third party laboratories, pilot brewery, or production breweries.
* Intellectual curiosity, and following through on said curiosity with strong analytical and critical thinking skills; strong cross-functional communication skills

Physical Requirements

*All production roles are required to pass a pre-employment physical exam to comply with their specific role requirement(s)

*Certain roles may require the use of a respirator and passing the associated fit test

*Ability to lift up to 50lbs, sometimes repeatedly

*Regular walking and standing for long periods of time (up to 11 hours a day) on concrete, metal and grated surfaces

*Responsibilities may require crouching, stepping over, crawling under, bending, twisting, climbing and reaching above head and shoulders repeatedly throughout the day

*Responsibilities may require climbing flights of stairs, working from heights or on elevated platforms

*Ability to wear assigned PPE (safety shoes, gloves, facemask, hearing protection and hard hat)

*Established dexterity so you can handle materials, operate equipment and interface with computer systems with precision

*Some roles (e.g., forklift operator) may be required to sit for a prolonged period of time and have strong peripheral vision and depth perception

What Ingredients You'll Bring:
Minimum Qualifications:
* 1-3 years progressive packaging materials development and engineering experience, preferably within the Beverage, Food, or FMCG industries
* Knowledge in a wide variety of beverage packaging materials, containers, and substrates including beverage cans, bottles, closure systems, labels, folding cartons, corrugated cartons and trays. flexible films, shrink films.
* Knowledge and experience in packaging material test methods and laboratory techniques (TAPPI, ASTM, ISTA)
* Familiarity with common software applications used in packaging engineering and development such as TOPS or CAPE palletization software and AutoCAD.
* Knowledge of packaging specification systems and databases
* Demonstrated packaging material defect and troubleshooting skills

Level: 7
In accordance with pay transparency lawsthe salary range for this role if hired is $82,000 - $114,000 annually based on location and the experience level of the candidate. In addition to base salary, this position is eligible for an annual discretionary bonus based on individual and company performance. Certain sales positions are also eligible for car allowance.
