Description

Chapman University seeks applications for a non-tenure track Instructional Assistant Professor of Elementary Education in the Donna Ford Attallah College of Educational Studies starting August 2024. The primary responsibilities of this faculty position include teaching, advising, and mentoring in the undergraduate and graduate teacher education programs in elementary education. Additional service to the college, university, community and profession of a non-tenure track faculty member is expected.

The Donna Ford Attallah College of Educational Studies, whose educator preparation programs are accredited nationally by CAEP and regionally accredited by WASC, is deeply committed to excellence in scholarship and teaching, providing students with personalized and rigorous educational experiences involving mentoring and collaborative research. Attallah College offers undergraduate (majors and minors) and graduate (master's, specialist, PhD) programs in liberal studies, community educational studies, leadership studies and leadership development, teacher education, disability studies, school counseling, and school psychology.

Undergraduates who intend to teach at the elementary level typically major in liberal studies and minor in elementary education; secondary-bound educators major in their content area and typically minor in secondary education. The Teacher Education program at Chapman University includes integrated pathways at the undergraduate to graduate level specifically designed for students to obtain their bachelor's degree, master's degree, and California dual teaching credentials (general education and special education) in five years of full-time study as well as the traditional credential-embedded master's degrees for those who enter teacher preparation after the conclusion of their bachelor's degree program. Responsibilities

The successful candidate will teach, advise, and mentor students in our undergraduate and graduate teacher preparation programs, with an emphasis on courses that contribute to the preparation of future elementary teachers and successful California multiple subjects credentialing. This includes preparing students to effectively serve as educators in a range of organizations, collaborating with individuals, families, communities, schools, and organizations toward an inclusive, equitable, and just world.

This is a full-time, non-tenure track position that requires work to be performed in the State of California and has in-person teaching responsibilities and required on-campus availability at Chapman's Orange campus.

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses related to teacher preparation with an emphasis in the preparation of future elementary teachers. Current course descriptions are available at https://catalog.chapman.edu.
  • Actively contribute as an integral member of the Teacher Education faculty in the ongoing development, implementation, and assessment of the overall program and its curriculum.
  • Provide support to individual teacher candidates throughout the CalTPA process, with an emphasis on multiple subjects candidates' needs and individual performance.
  • Provide academic advising and professional mentorship to teacher candidates, including participation in the recruitment and admission of candidates to the programs.
  • Perform service to the unit, college, university, profession and wider community as expected of a non-tenure track faculty member.
Qualifications

Required qualifications:

  • Conferrred doctorate by the start of employment in education or related field from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of 5 years' teaching experience in diverse elementary (grades TK-6) school settings.
  • Current valid or eligible to receive State of California multiple subject teaching credential/certificate or NBCT.
  • Current knowledge of the adopted California P-12 content standards, frameworks and accountability systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide student support in the CalTPA process for multiple subjects candidates (grades TK-6), including supporting video performance assessment.
  • Demonstrated ability to build beneficial and productive working relationships within the university and public education communities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity, inclusion, and multicultural competence in education and must be willing to contribute to the University Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion plan.

Desired qualifications:

  • Evidence of effective teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience teaching using the science of reading and structured literacy (reading and writing) in the elementary grades.
  • Ability to teach generalist/foundational courses as well as a variety of specific content methods courses applicable to multiple subjects educator preparation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current California TPE and CalTPA requirements for teacher education candidates.
  • Experience with teacher performance assessment (i.e., teacher evaluation), classroom observation protocols, and the administration of valid and reliable tools for the assessment of teacher performance.
  • Familiarity with state and national standards for the profession and integration of teacher performance standards into teacher preparation curricula.
  • Experience with development, implementation, and evaluation of innovative teaching practices.
  • Experience with development, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs in collaboration with local communities, K-12 schools, and/or community colleges.
  • Ability to design and implement program and course assessment tools.
  • Expertise and facility with technology, including remote instruction.
  • Experience serving and/or teaching in underserved communities.
  • Active involvement in professional organizations.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills.
