Primary Purpose
The Principal Domain Engineer leads provisioning and configuration of one or more complex systems, platforms, or networks, with a focus on those with significant dependencies and potential impacts to other systems, applications, and teams. Knowledgeable in multiple distinct areas of infrastructure, security, or operations, builds, runs, and maintains critical IT infrastructure, making it available on a self-service basis to agile product teams, and ensuring reliability of IT systems and infrastructure.

Works with Contractors through external vendor manager directly or their back-office support for any assigned work, to coordinate status meetings with external vendor manager to review progress and quality of assigned work. Assists as needed with providing company protocols, scope of work, and contract adjustments.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Builds and maintains high-performance, fault-tolerant (i.e., resilient, and able to continue operating in event of failure of one or more components), secure and scalable technology. Oversees installation, configuration, and maintenance of technology systems and applications relevant to specialized domain where a domain is defined as an organized set of components based on technology, business, or organizational similarities typically with significant technology trends impacting its environment (e.g., Cloud, Cybersecurity). Leads in creation of processes and templates for implementations related to area of responsibility. Creates appropriate documentation for all development within domain. Implements high risk and/or scalable technology changes according to delivery framework, for business-critical functional areas while following established designs and configurations. Provides consultation to product teams on engineering and operational topics relevant to area of responsibility, providing expertise related to specific systems and integrations. Identifies risks and impacts of product's development. Provides input and oversight where needed for development of applications and systems. Exercises considerable latitude and initiative to solve challenging technical problems and influence technological maturity across team and group. Leads long-term initiatives in area of expertise, collaborating with multiple teams and stakeholders to develop technology and systems. Anticipates and manages risks to drive team success. Ensures effective management of defects and unresolved incidents, and drives continuous improvement in engineering practices across organization.
  • Leads analysis, diagnosis and repair of technology systems, platforms, an/or networks, ensuring adequate performance and capacity management. Leads triage and issue resolution for escalated activities, applying technical expertise and deep knowledge of domain to identify root causes, and identify solutions. Plans all activities associated with support and maintenance of technology platforms, systems and IT infrastructure within area of responsibility. Provides subject matter expertise in highly specialized areas of technology related to IT infrastructure, security, platforms, databases, and enterprise systems. Provides operational oversight of timeliness and quality of vendors' deliverables providing maintenance and support of technology and systems. Provides input into Technology Lifecycle Roadmap through ongoing discovery, analysis, and assessment.
  • Drives selection of technology (systems, platforms, or networks) to deliver needed capabilities. Analyzes new technology to identify and mitigate risks. Plans system, platform, or network enhancements, taking into account dependencies between technology systems, potential risks of implementation, and adherence to corporate standards and security policies. Drives identification and mitigation of dependencies and risks associated with system or platform they are responsible for to meet performance needs. Partners with architects to ensure adherence to overall architecture and standards. Contributes to development of a self-service model for platforms and technology services that empowers development teams and drives efficiency.
  • Participates in scrum ceremonies (i.e., the 5 ceremonies involved in Scrum methodology: daily stand up, sprint planning, backlog refinement, demos, and retrospectives), acting as a Subject Matter Expert (SME), informs sprint planning which is the initial planning event that begins a sprint and defines what can be delivered in a sprint. Actively supports product teams in writing user stories and defining user story acceptance criteria where their expertise is applicable. A user story is a unit of work that is delivered within a sprint, typically captured with a specific format including acceptance criteria that determine when the story can be accepted as complete.

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Information Systems, Software Engineering, Computer Science, related field or equivalent training and/or experience. Required

Experience

  • 8 years - Progressive experience working with IT software, systems, and/or infrastructure, including progressive programming experience in one or more programming languages Required
  • 5 years - Experience working with IT infrastructure, with experience in the planning, building, and troubleshooting of systems. Required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • IT Service Management - Ability to manage IT services lifecycle (service strategy, design, transition, operation, continuous service improvement) and use DevOps methodology and tools to analyze results. Required
  • Development Languages - Knowledge and understanding of multiple IT programming languages and ability to write code and develop applications using those languages. Required
  • Packaged Platforms / Systems - Knowledge of technologies and Packaged Platform/Systems such as SAP, IBM, Oracle, Public Cloud services, etc. Required
  • Software Delivery Frameworks - Strong knowledge of delivery frameworks such as Agile Scrum, Kanban, and/or Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC); proven ability executing projects in a collaborative, fast-paced environment. Required

Preferred

  • Cloud Delivery - Familiarity with different cloud computing delivery models, knowledge of cloud-based solutions for Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), and Software as a Service (SaaS), and ability to deliver cloud-based technologies and systems. Preferred
  • DevSecOps Methodologies - Strong understanding of processes and concepts to drive the integration of development, operations, and security into enterprise software development to produce better outcomes. Preferred
  • Cloud Operations, Scaling and Maintenance - Ability to maintain and administer a Cloud network, including acquiring, testing, installing, patch management, replacing or upgrading both hardware and software features. Preferred
  • In-depth knowledge of either Cisco, Juniper, Aruba, or Nokia network management systems. Extensive experience working with Network Management tools including Nagios, Statseeker, Splunk, and Nokia Serve Platform (Highly desired). Data Center Technologies - Spine Leaf Architecture, LACP, MCLAG, spanning tree, EVPN/VXLAN, virtual routing and forwarding. Ability to script in either UNIX or Powershell. Extensive experience working with large-scale enterprise WAN & LAN infrastructure. Routing/Internet Protocols, BGP, OSPF, Multicast, IS-IS and private/public MPLS experience. Scripting and automation - Ansible, Nornir, NAPALM, JSON, Python, SLAX, or XSLT. Security Architecture - Zero Trust Architecture, DDOS Protection, Web Application Firewalls, Next-Gen Firewalls, SSL VPN, Palo Alto Networks, VMware NSX. Extensive knowledge of security policies, NAT rules. Ability to troubleshoot routing/firewall issues. Advanced
  • Expertise in various telecom/IT equipment such as multiplexers, routers, switches, NTP/PTP and other telecommunication/ IT systems. Expertise in MDF/IDF designs, rack elevation, cable planning and physical infrastructure engineering. This includes rack elevation designs, power, and environmental designs. Expertise in AC and DC power design. Experience with business cases, technical specifications, network design and requests for quotations/proposals. Expertise in various telecom industry standards (i.e., ITU, ETSI, Telcordia (Bellcore), IP702, FCC, IEEE). Knowledgeable on various cellular technologies such as AMPS, TDMA, GSM, CDMA, and WCDMA/UMTS. Expertise in computer applications i.e. Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Visio), CAD, etc. Advanced
  • Design mobile/field communication networks. Design equipment deployment runbooks. Design routine test process & maintenance of trailers & all field gear. Design process for routine tests & maintenance of SD-WAN data center gear. Work with EOC and emergency management on the continuous development of our emergency response procedures. Examples of designing and building mobile/field communication networks include, but are not limited to:
    • Aruba Wi-Fi gear for wireless LAN setups to support field users (both 'instant' and 'campus' variants)
      • Nokia and Juniper switching gear, to handle layer 2 and layer 3 traffic
      • Silver Peak and Cisco (old Viptela) SD-WAN gear, to establish secured, tunneled comms with our data centers
      • Cellular-based comms (using Digi modems and/or Nokia SAR-Hmc routers), to provide cellular backhaul through which SD-WAN appliances can reach data center edge
      • Satellite-based comms (using Cobham dish controllers and iDirect modems mostly), to provide satellite backhaul for SD-WAN appliances
      • OOBM comms (WTI based), using satellite backhaul (RigNet / Hughes based)
      • Microwave-based comms (RAD Airmux gear) for BGP peering with MPLS routers on mountain tops (not SD-WAN, of course)
      • Voice solutions including Avaya IP-based phones and Iridium satellite phones
      • A/V solutions including American Dynamics / VideoEdge network video recorders and IP cameras (Bosch & others)
  • Examples of process development regarding live deployments:

      • Setup trailers, network, and IT gear for field personnel
      • Provide IT support during the duration of the deployment
      • Shutdown & prep gear for demobilization post-deployment

    Licenses & Certifications


    • NRS, CCNP, CCIE, JNCP, JNCIE, or other industry certifications a plus Preferred

Other Qualifications

  • May require work outside of normal business hours and/or 24/7 response availability for system and application maintenance, enhancements, production releases and/or operational emergencies.
